Walking into the archaeological site of Pompeii is like stepping back in time.
Today, Pompeii is known as the city with the most important archaeological site in the world, which has gradually uncovered a very important urban centre from the time of the Roman Empire. Pompeii was a rather flourishing and prosperous city with about twenty thousand inhabitants, its streets were bustling with artisans' and merchants' workshops and several of its citizens lived in luxurious, richly furnished and frescoed villas. In addition, Pompeii and the surrounding lands were a holiday resort.
With the eruption of 79 AD, the city was completely buried under a heap of lapilli, ash and lava, and with it many of its people.
