The city of Herculaneum, called Resina until 1969, was founded by the Etruscans and, in the 5th century BC, was conquered by the Romans.
In the last age of the Republic Herculaneum experienced a period of great splendour until the eruption of 62 AD that devastated the city. During its reconstruction, it was completely buried by the devastating eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, which wiped out the inhabitants.
In 1709, Prince D'Elboeuf, in order to escape the Austrians, gave orders to dig a well; during the excavation, many artefacts came to light and it was only in 1738 that excavations were organised and resumed by Charles III of Bourbon.
