The Amalfi drive is said to be the most spectacular in Europe and from Sorrento the winding cliff top road offers continuous breathtaking panoramic views. The first stop will be high above Positano, one of the jewels of this coastline built on different levels from the main road all the way down to sea like a “waterfall cascading down the rocks”. Further along the coast, the coach makes a refreshment stop where you can admire the local ceramics in a traditional shop and enjoy panoramic views before going on to the town of Amalfi, which gives its name to the whole coast on which it lies. Once a thriving Marine Republic along with Genoa, Pisa and Venice and now a thriving holiday resort, this ancient town is dominated by the magnificent 9th century Cathedral where the remains of the Patron Saint of Amalfi are preserved. Free time to explore the cobbled backstreets of Amalfi before continuing to the medieval town of Ravello which nestles in the mountainside eleven hundred feet above the sea and where you can enjoy the best views of the Amalfi coastline overlooking Minori, Maiori and beyond. This charming little town has a main square where the centrepiece is the bright picturesque 11th century Cathedral. Capri is a Mediterranean island that has seen intellectuals, artists and writers all enthralled by its magical beauty. Transfer from your hotel or meeting point to the port where you’ll board your boat starting your cruise along the coastline with the chance to stop for swimming before heading across the bay to Capri. Once there the boat will take you around the island to see its most beautiful sights such as the White Grotto, the Natural Arch, the Green Grotto, the lighthouse of Punta Carena, Blue Grotto and the famous Faraglioni Rocks where Dolce & Gabbana adverts are filmed. The beautiful bay of Naples is dominated by two important landmarks both connected by historical and cultural tradition: the archaeological site of Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius. The mountain was once cone shaped, much higher, and the slopes covered in woodland and vineyards providing an innocent backdrop to the town below until the eruption of 79 AD. Herculaneum was an ancient Roman town situated in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, submerged under a torrent of mud and lava after Mount Vesuvius eruption in 79 AD. The buildings have been so well preserved that you can walk down the streets pretty much exactly as the Romans would have done over 2000 years ago! There are still original timbers in the buildings and clay pots stored as they would have been at the time of the eruption. Together with your guide, you’ll visit many of the most important sites, public baths with their well-preserved frescoes and mosaics, shops and the gymnasium.
